After your Invisalign treatment, just like with braces, you’ll need “invisible retainers” to maintain the position of your teeth. Most of our patients who finish Invisalign prefer the clear retainers that are made by Invisalign – they are called Vivera retainers. They look very much like the Invisalign aligners – they are clear, plastic, and cover all of the teeth – but there are two important differences.
First, unlike the aligners, the retainers are not moving your teeth, they are maintaining the position of your teeth. Second, the retainers are made of a more durable and more rigid type of plastic. This allows them to effectively maintain the position of your teeth long term. Vivera retainers are very comfortable and work great for patients who were treated with Invisalign or with braces.
Like other removable orthodontic retainers, Invisalign retainers require maintenance over time. You need to clean them everyday to keep them looking and smelling good. You also have to replace them over time because they do wear out. Nothing lasts forever, and it’s important to replace your retainers when they start to show signs of significant wear.
When patients finish treatment with Invisalign, we typically recommend retainer wear for 12-16 hours per day, gradually decreasing over the first few months to wearing them just while you sleep. It takes a little effort to wear your retainers, but considering what you’ve invested in your smile, it’s well worth the effort to maintain it.
Don’t forget that BEFORE you can get Invisalign clear retainers, you first need to use Invisalign aligners or clear braces to adjust your teeth.
