Caring for your braces during the holidays is really important. The end of the year is a time where people, and especially children are involved in a lot of activities, many of which involve food. It’s really important to pay special attention that you take amazing care of your braces during this time as it can be more challenging to get things taken care of during the holiday seasons. Here are a few important things to keep in mind for taking good care of your braces.
The first is keeping them clean. As you’re thinking about caring for your braces, make sure that you’re using excellent brushing technique. Brush at least twice a day morning and night, more if you can. As kids may be out of school part of this time and out of their daily routine, this can get a little harder. You wake up a little later, you go to bed a little later. You’re not at your house when you go to sleep. Maybe you’re on vacation visiting relatives or friends. It’s really important to be mindful to remember that brushing is important and that you need to set yourself up for success by having a toothbrush with you, and remembering to clean your teeth morning and night. So remember:
Make sure you take the time out of your activities to floss, brush, and get your teeth super clean.
The second thing is to avoid breaking your braces. With lots of yummy, and sticky, and chewy, and hard candy, and treats, and chips to eat. You have to be careful that you’re not eating anything too sticky or hard, and that you eat carefully so you don’t break your braces. If you’re not careful, you can knock something loose. If you’re on vacation it can be hard to get in to get it fixed in a timely manner, so it’s really important to be careful and avoid eating anything too hard or too sticky. While enjoying some great winter activities, try your best to avoid getting hit in the mouth (I know we shouldn’t have to say it, but just be careful).
If you’re headed off on vacation, ensure you’re prepared to take good care of your braces. First of all, you want to make sure that you’ve got your toothbrush and floss (and even your mouthwash). You should also make sure that you have some orthodontic wax in case something does happen and a wire becomes loose or a part of it begins to rub the wrong way and you can’t get in to see your orthodontist right away. You want to make sure that you can cover it up with some orthodontic wax for a couple of days and continue going about your activities without interruption. Also, take the time to get in to see your orthodontist at appropriate intervals for your adjustments. You don’t want to be missing orthodontic appointments even though you’re busy, you don’t want to slow down your treatment.
With these tips, you can continue to have a great experience with your braces throughout the holiday season.
